The Opportunity 

Gravel Hill Supplies Ltd. in Cowichan Bay, BC has an immediate opening for an experienced Heavy Equipment Operator with excavator, dozer, or rock Truck experience to join our team. This position will focus on safely operating various heavy equipment, both with the Gravel Hill team and with external stakeholders. This role will report to the Operations Manager, but the ideal candidate will be able to work independently while collaborating with members of the team as required. The successful candidate will be responsible for operating in a safe, efficient manner.

This role will serve our yards across the Southern Island.

Job Details

·         Effectively and safely operate heavy equipment as part of a team and use machine-specific controls and machine attachments to complete all necessary tasks.

·         Operate machinery in crowded, fast-paced, uneven working environments and exercise extreme caution with awareness of potential situational hazards to ensure site safety.

·         Confidently interpret verbal and non-verbal communication, including hand signals, from operators, ground personnel and swampers, and able to act accordingly.

·         Perform mechanical inspections, including controls and operations, complete logbooks, perform daily maintenance checks including machine lubrication.

·         Effective operation of equipment by recognizing unusual machine movements and sounds.

·         Recognize existing and potential hazards and identify these via field level pre-job hazard analysis, checking the machine for hazards, and assessing any tasks before starting.

·         Additional duties as required.

What you bring:

·         3+ years’ experience operating excavator or other heavy machinery

·         Prior experience on excavators, dozers or rock trucks will be considered an asset

·         Preference may be given to candidates with high school diploma or GED

·         Excellent interpersonal skills, including strong, clear communication skill

·         Understanding of aggregate or a willingness to learn

·         Proven ability to work with shifting priorities and manage time effectively

·         Demonstrated strong analytical and problem-solving skills
